Design Development
One of the simplest designs is a second shadow course, usually a short distance from another course.
On shingled roofs it is common for additional courses to be installed one on top of the other for an extra thick "shadow line" effect (like this background). This extra course was usually done every 6 to 12 rows, and evenly spaced up the slope.
Shingle siding often alternated a narrow row with a wide row like the example to the left.
